Top cops get SC dressing down

LAHORE – The Supreme Court of Pakistan on Tuesday summoned, on a short notice, Inspector General of Police Haji Habibur Rehman and SSP (Investigations) Abdul Razzaq Cheema and admonished them. CJ Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, heading a two-judge Bench, also summoned details of all the prisoners in jails across the Punjab whose challans had been submitted.
The Bench observed: “The police officers will realise the gravity of the matter if they spend even a single day in jail.” The Bench ordered the IGP and IG Prisons to appear before the court on Wednesday (today) along with their replies and the record.
CJ Chaudhry asked the IGP, “How will you feel if the court releases all those prisoners whose challans could not be submitted?” The IGP informed the court that he would ensure submission of challans of the accused as early as possible. The Bench took this notice while hearing a bail application of one Ali Nawaz in a murder case wherein the court was informed that the accused was behind the bars for the last eight months and there was no challan. The accused had allegedly murdered the wife of his advocate.
He submitted that the relatives of his former wife lodged FIR against him implicating him in her murder case on May 07, 2011. He requested the court to grant him bail which was earlier rejected by a Sessions Court and then by the Lahore High Court. However, after recording arguments, the bench dismissed the bail application of the accused.
