| Pakistan and England should put cricket scandals behind them | |
| | The England cricket captain says the scandals that have plagued recent series with Pakistan must be forgotten when they play the side in the United Arab Emirates later this month.
Andrew Strauss, who captained England during the 2010 Lord’s Test in which Mohammad Amir and Mohammad Asif bowled three no-balls to order, admitted that it felt surreal that three of his opponents that day, Asif, Amir, and Salman Butt, were now behind bars.
“It’s an odd thing to see fellow cricketers in prison, but it sent out a very strong message that there’s no place for that sort of thing in the game of cricket,” Strauss said.
The corresponding series four years earlier also ended with Pakistan refusing to play on in one test after umpires Darrell Hair and Billy Doctrove penalised the Pakistan team for ball-tampering.
"I think it's important that both the England players and the Pakistan players put what's happened before behind them," the England captain said.
"I don't have any pre-conceptions, this should be a particularly difficult series, let's go out there and enjoy our play and create really good entertaining cricket, it's bound to be highly competitive but we don't want to see any flare-ups, we don't want to see any off-field stuff happen," he added. |
