ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court hearing for a show-cause notice issued to Bahria Town chief Malik Riaz Hussain over a controversial press briefing resumed under the chairmanship of Supreme Court Justice, Mian Shakirullah Jan on Thursday, DawnNews reported.
Malik Riaz was not able to arrange a lawyer to represent him in the case as most of the lawyers have been avoiding Riaz to show solidarity with the Supreme Court against the conspiracies hatched against it.
Riaz told the court that he was facing a media trial and requested for ten days to arrange for a lawyer. He also claimed that in case he failed on his committment then he would face the punishment worthy of a criminal.
Jan while giving his remarks during the hearing said that every citizen has the right tobe able to defend himself and in case Malik Riaz could not arrange a defence lawyer for himself then the state would provide him with one.
Islamabad High Court Bar Association President Chaudhry Muhammad Ashraf Gujjar, who is also a petitioner, informed the court that no one was stopping Malik Riaz from obtaining a lawyer for his defence, and that the defendant could avail the services of any lawyer within his personal capacity and no bar association would cause hindrance to it.
Gujjar also requested the court to grant Malik Riaz four days to arrange for a lawyer.
Earlier, Riaz had requested the court to provide him with stringent security on the occasion of his court appearance.
In the request submitted to the Supreme Court, the real state tycoon said that his life was in danger and that he was receiving threats, hence he required strict security measures.
Some lawyers had hurled threats at Malik Riaz during one of his court appearance and others had mistreated him on another occasion, according to Riaz.
He added that a media campaign was being run to incite the masses against him.
Earlier, Chief Justice Pakistan Iftikhar Chaudhry had taken a suo moto notice against his own son Arsalan Iftikhar and real state tycoon Malik Riaz, following allegations leveled against them on a private news channel. | | See Also in Political News
