Tara Chand, resident of room number 26 of the Hans Raj hostel was in for a pleasant shock when he saw Anurag sitting on his bed. Anurag told him, "Yeh mera room hua karta tha. Tum Chemistry Honours padhte ho na? Yahaan saare science students hi aate hain"
Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap was more than happy to accept an invitation from Manoj Mittal and the Hans Raj principal VK Kawatra to the alumni meet of his college. On his four-hour trip down memory lane, he spoke to TOI about his life in DU.
I smelt of coconut oil on the first day
I was 16 when I got admission in Hans Raj College. I completed school when I was 16, so everyone in my class - Zoology Honours batch 92 - was 18, and I was often treated like a kid. The girls used to feed me. Par mujhse poori college life mein koi ladki impress nahi hui. I used to regret that. I studied in a boarding school, so I had no clue how to dress up when you go to a co-ed institution. On the first day of college, I oiled my hair with coconut oil and parted them from the centre.
My sister was my mentor
My elder sister Rashmi, who was a student of Miranda House, had brought me to DU. When she saw me, she was surprised. So, she bought me a couple of new T-shirts, and told me not to oil my hair. She was my mentor. I would earn some pocket money by taking tuitions for children of a few professors of my college. I'd earn `400 per month. And Rashmi didi would give me `10 per day as pocket money. That's all I used to have. Par tab canteen mein khaane ke paise bhi nahin hote thay, aur aaj canteen mein paise doonga toh bhi koi nahin lega. Those were fun days. Kawatra sir was my Zoology teacher. Later, I got to know that my mentor-teacher has become the principal!
I wasn't friends with Imtiaz or Arjun Rampal
Many think that Imtiaz was my friend in college. But I made friends with him after my college days, during that one year when I did nothing. Shiney Ahuja was such a fat guy. He was so plump. In those days, it was only Arjun Rampal who was the good looking guy jisse saari ladkiyaan impress ho jaati thi. And all Hans Raj students envied him. I always remember and miss my college days. It was a wonderful life, but the egos and issues etc of college have not stayed with me after graduation. I have forgotten all of that. I don't know if I'd ever want to show my college life in the films I make. I think I've passed that stage long ago.

later, we got talking to a few professors at the college. Professor P Kumar said, "Anurag used to be a quiet guy in college, so many didn't know much about him then. I wasn't his teacher, but as I was into photography, Anurag wanted to learn from me, so he'd often stand outside my class. Few years ago, he called me when he was in Delhi, and I asked, 'Who Anurag?' He explained, and said, 'Meri akhbaar mein photo bhi aati hai... aapne pehchana nahin? Main thoda mota ho gaya hoon, shayad isliye.' Professor Hardeep Kaur said, "During college days, I bumped into him one day outside the college, and he was in a different avatar. He told me, 'Ma'am, aaj kal main thoda theatre karne lag gaya hoon...' But that never affected his marks, he was always a good scorer." | | See Also in Showbiz News

LAHORE : “In early ‘50s Manto predicted a close alliance between America and the Pakistani mullahs to defeat the Soviets,” said Shahid Nadeem, the writer of the play Kaun Hai Yeh Gustakh, staged by the Ajoka Theatre Group at the Alhamra Arts Council here on Friday.
